21 great holiday gifts for college students

(MoneyWatch) If you haven't begun shopping for

holiday gifts for college students on your list, now is the time to get started. To help make it easier to find great presents for students, here are 21 gift ideas:

1. Nearly effortless diary. Urban Outfitters sells a five-year memory book that has enough room for the owner to write one line a day in it. ($16.95).

2. Wallet stuffed with surprises. I stole this idea from a mom who bought a wallet for her son last Christmas and then put in cash, movie tickets and gift cards for stores that he liked. The gift was a big hit.

3. Rugged camera. GoPro cameras are shock-proof and waterproof and can be used for such recreational activities as biking, snowboarding, swimming, surfing and running. Video from these cameras have appeared in dozens of television shows, including Mythbusters ($200-$400).

4. Chalkboard coffee cup. You can write your own messages with chalk on this black ceramic coffee cup with lid ($12).

5. Bluetooth speakers. Students can share their favorite songs from their smartphone or mp3 player with bluetooth speakers. The Kinivo ZX100 Mini Portfable Speaker with rechargeable battery has received great reviews and is affordable ($18.95). For more expensive wireless speakers, check this popular one from Logitech ($109).

6. Mini coffee maker with travel mug. No need to head to the cafeteria when a college student needs a cup of coffee. I like this single-serve Black and Decker coffee maker because the cup is a travel mug.

7. Unique USB flash drives. How about a flash drive bracelet ($20) for a stocking stuffer or how about a cork flash drive?

8. A great read. If you give "Gone Girl" as a Christmas present to a young woman on your list, don't be surprised if she spends December 25 with her nose in this popular thriller. Here's another book suggestion from an ex-Navy seal: "No Easy Day: The First Hand Account of the Mission that Killed Osama bin Laden."

9. Even if you have a lot of other priorities for instance, sports, extracurricular activities, etc., still you need to complete a senior project to graduate successfullyFamily recipes. This can be a priceless gift for college students who now must cook for themselves. Buy a binder and fill it with your child's favorite family recipes. Another alternative -- check out "I Love Trader Joe's College Cook Book."

10. Plane ticket. Spring for a plane ticket for your child to head out for spring break or to visit a college friend over the summer break.

11. Chick flicks. Buy your child's favorite blue-ray movies. Here is a chick flick package ($37) that includes "Juno," "27 Dresses" and "The Devil Wears Prada."

12. Geek clock. If your child is into math or engineering, consider this geek clock for his or her dorm room. I bought one for my son last Christmas and he loves it.

13. Touchscreen gloves. It could be cold out, but students can still use their phone, iPad, eReaders and other electronic devices by wearing touchscreen gloves.

14. College advice. Besides my own book, "The Thinking Student's Guide to College" is my favorite title in the college niche. It's a book for college students who want to make the absolute most out of their college years.

15. Heart-rate monitor watch. Heart-rate monitor watches work with a chest strap to allow users to see how hard they are working and how many calories they're burning. Here's one suggestion -- the Timex T5j031 Unisex Digital Fitness Heart Rate Monitor Watch ($59.47).

16. Etsy gift. If you haven't visited this online bazaar of homemade gifts, ranging from jewelry and clothing to art and an an assortment of strange gadgets, you've got to take a peek. You sure won't find Etsy creations at the mall.

17. Swiss Army Knife. For a tricked-out knife, check out the Swiss Army CyberTool 34, which includes a can opener, corkscrew, scissors, toothpick, wire cutters, screw drivers, bit wrench, bottle opener and much more. ($92)

18. OPI nail polish gift set. The bottles in this nail polish set from Sephora ($49.50) are small, but since trends are always changing college students rarely finish full-size bottles anyway. Here are other gift ideas from the cosmetics store.

19. Personalized business card case. Some day soon your child will need business cards. Here's a circuit board business card case, some Frank Lloyd Wright cases and a more traditional leather business card case.

20. Classic stationary. Many students need stationary to write "thank you" notes for internships, jobs, fellowships and mentors. Handwritten notes on classy stationary from Crane & Co. or other stationers will fit the bill.

21. Leather portfolio. These classy portfolios, which can hold resumes, a pad of paper, pens and more, will come in handy when a college student has lined up interviews for jobs or internships. ($18 to $60)

Increase Golf Club Head Speed With Swing Release

Most club golfers hit at the ball and rarely follow through to a full finish; they quit at impact. But if the club is released correctly, like a stone being slug into the distance from a slingshot, the resulting whip through almost pulls the golfer into the finish position.

To create maximum club head speed the golfer must firmly plant the left side, then use centrifugal force to whip the hands into impact and then hit past the body. In the old days the expression used was brace the left leg and hit against a firm left side. In extreme cases, where athletes create huge centrifugal force by bracing the left side, it can cause injury. This is how Tiger Woods became injured.

How Pros Hit Past the BodyIf you study the head movement of a powerful driver of the ball there are some interesting things to note as the golfer comes into impact. In order to increase the sling shot effect of centrifugal force the head actually moves back. This increases their ability to hit against a firm base and whip the hands past the body. The head movement of a club golfer tends to work in an opposite way. Rather than anchoring the head a club golfer lets the head start to come up. This means at impact the hands cant swing past the body with maximum speed as its moving. At impact the body must stop so the hands can swing past. The weight transference should have happened by the time the golfer gets into the pre-release position, it does not move forward as the hands release. However, after the club has been powerfully released the body gets pulled after it to a finish.Tip to Hit Past the Body With Hand AcionAt address, instead of having your left foot turned out towards the target, turn it back so it is at right angles to the hole. This will anchor the bottom of the body.Make sure your head is tilted slightly to the right at stance and keep t there during the backswing. As the downswing starts make sure the head stays at the same angle relative to the body and dont look up until you have hit the ball.If you keep both ends of the body anchored you are giving yourself the best chance of creating the necessary centrifugal force to whip the hands into impact and and then sling the club past the body to a natural finish position.

If you have found this article interesting you might want to read John Hoskison's bestselling ebook a Golf Swing You Can Trust which describes the swing in a novel and fascinating way and has helped many golfers build a swing that works. Even if you have a lot of other priorities for instance, sports, extracurricular activities, etc., still you need to complete a senior project to graduate successfullyThis revolutionary book will save you time and energy if you follow the simple drills.

The Natural Park of the Sierras of Tejeda Almijara and Alhama

Male Ibex in the Parque Natural de Tejeda y AlmijaraHoliday makers in Spain can still enjoy the stunning scenery of the Costa del Sol as it was 50 years ago if they head east from Malaga. Immediately to the north of the attractive coastal town of Nerja on the eastern Costa del Sol, lies a magnificent area of unspoiled mountains - the Parque Natural de las Sierras de Tejeda, Almijara y Alhama. These three mountain ranges, sprawling across the boundary of the provinces of Granada and Malaga, are a westward extension of the Sierra de Nevada and contain a wonderful variety of scenery, wildlife and wildflowers. The traditional white mountain villages or pueblos scattered around the edge of the natural park add to its charm and beauty, offer attractive bases for visitors and walkers, and still support many of the traditional economic activities of the mountain communities. This environmentally invaluable area is a perfect place for activity holidays and a wonderful example of the best of Andalucia and the Costa del Sol before so many parts were spoiled by uncontrolled development.

The Scenery of the Natural Park

The park is a tumble of rugged mountain peaks, extending as far as the eye can see in all directions, in fact nearly 40km from east to west and nearly 20km from north to south.

The higher slopes, rising to around 2000m, are bare rock, often shining white with snow in the winter sun. Here nothing grows but the occasional tiny patch of lichen.

Slightly lower, at around 12-1500m the slopes are like a glorious alpine garden of delicate wildflowers and stunted pines clinging to crevices in the rock.

Lower still, from 200-1000 metres or so is the garrigue, rough mountain scrub of herbs, bushes and small trees, growing steadily thicker and more luxuriant at decreasing altitudes. Here the slopes are carpeted with bright flowering cistus and sage, and the air carries the sharp fragrance of thyme, lavender and pine. Scattered pine and evergreen oak woods offer welcome shade.

Finally tumbling mountain streams carve deep valleys through the mountains, their banks thick with pines, laurels and oleanders. In their lower reaches, these streams provide generous irrigation for the pastures, farms and orchards which cluster around them on the park's perimeter.

Wildlife in the Natural Park

The park is a naturalist's delight, offering a refuge and habitat for a huge range of birds, insects, reptiles and mammals. Perhaps the most spectacular, and certainly the largest are the ibex, a breed of mountain goat the size of deer. These are quite plentiful, but timid and they need a sharp eye to catch a glimpse of them.

Protecting The Park's Environment and Economy

There are almost no roads, few drivable tracks, and the park authorities exercise strict control over activities like camping which could harm the environment. They are nevertheless keen to support environmentally responsible tourism, as well as traditional, ecofriendly, sustainable and beneficial economic activities in the park partly to help sustain the economic viability of the surrounding pueblos.

To this end activities like beekeeping, sheep and cattle grazing and goat herding in the natural park are all allowed with appropriate controls. The park also has a substantial reafforestation programme, slowly rolling back the tide on centuries of deforestation, and sustainable logging helps to support other environmental work.

Holidaymakers, and walkers in particular, are welcomed as part of the local dependence on tourism, and many walking routes are well signed and maintained.

Some Facts About the Parque NaturalThe park lies half in Malaga Province and half in Granada, but was set up and is administered by the Junta de AndaluciaIt covers 40,600 hectares, of which 4,700 hectares is still privately owned. Its highest peak is La Maroma, 20080 metres highThe park has only 20 full time staff, relying on contractors for much of the work carried out in the parkThe annual budget of E300,000 is funded by Andalucia, with some help from Madrid and Brussels for particular projects. Even if you have a lot of other priorities for instance, sports, extracurricular activities, etc., still you need to complete a senior project to graduate successfullyThis is supplemented by earnings from forestry, farming, etc.A visitor information centre is planned to open in Sedella soon. The Guard Civil, helped by Park staff regularly carry out 2 or 3 rescues a year. Dont forget that the mountains can be dangerous as well as beautiful. Dress appropriately, be prepared for sudden changes in weather, carry adequate food, water and a map and make sure someone knows where youre going.More information about the natural park.

Holiday Gift Ideas for Employees

Choosing gifts for employees or colleagues at the office could be tricky at times. It is really difficult to guess what a person may actually like or dislike. However, gifts are after all a gesture of exchanging greetings and showing concern about the person in question. Thus, a simple and useful would also be appreciated. Nowadays, corporate houses provide special attention to holiday gifts being presented to their employees. Let us have a look at some of the holiday gift ideas for employees through this article.

Holiday Gifts for Employees

As mentioned in the paragraph above, the gifts for employees need to be simple but useful. There should also be some thought in selecting these corporate gifts. If possible, one should try to select different gift items for different employees. It is possible to choose separate gifts for employees in smaller organizations where the head-count is lesser than in large corporate groups. Taking into account the nature of employees while choosing a gift would add value to it. For example, an employee who is interested in activities like trekking, mountaineering, hiking, etc. would find a backpack to be of great use; binoculars, handheld GPS, etc. are some of the other ideas for gifting to such employees. Some of the popular ideas, trends and gift items for employees are discussed in the following paragraphs.

Creative Holiday Gift Ideas

Applying your mind in creative ways for gifting the employees would go a long way in motivating and keeping them enthused. Mementos, accessories (bags, T-shirts, etc.) and other items is the regular stuff that everyone expects for a gift. However, one can also try out ideas like giving the employees an extra off just before the beginning of holidays; such kind of surprises would make the employees feel even happier. Bonus is one such thing that would definitely please the employees. A monetary gift presented just before the Christmas holidays would surely double up their joy. Throwing a party for employees just before the holidays is one the best ways to cheer them up. Shopping vouchers can come in handy since employees would be going on a holiday.

Corporate Holiday Gift Ideas

In the corporate world, there is a new trend to present employees with gifts that are imprinted with the company logo. Such kind of gifts presented to employees include mugs, bags and even golf balls. Wrist watch also is a common choice for gifts in corporate houses. Chocolate gifts are considered as popular items presented to employees by the company management. CDs and DVDs of music, classic movies, etc. could prove to be a good choice for employees. Some of the corporate gifts like holiday tours for employees could be a little expensive. However, bigger companies don't mind spending on gifting the employees who deserve them. There are many corporate houses that arrange for such gifts for a select group of employees.

Homemade Holiday Gift Ideas

The idea of creating homemade gifts is a noble one; it is also refreshing for the recipients to get something different from the regular, ready-made stuff. Handmade gifts presented to employees could be anything like greeting cards, bouquets, etc. However, these gifts should not be limited to a few craft items. There is a lot that one can prepare at home for holiday gifts. Hand-picked fruits from the backyard packed in a basket would constitute an attractive gift item. The commonly used fruits for gifting include figs, blackberries, etc. Presenting the employees with layered cookies is also amongst the best homemade holiday gift ideas. Mason jars and fabrics sold in supermarkets can be used to prepare cookies. The method of preparation of such gifts is simple (layering the jars with ingredients followed by packing with fabrics) and doesn't cost much. The above mentioned ideas can be used in smaller organizations where the number of employees is less.

Holiday Gift Ideas for Coworkers

Presenting the coworkers with desk items is a nice idea. Such gifts are available in a wide price range and one can choose appropriate ones from amongst them. Desk organizers are the best gifts that one can think of presenting to coworkers. Pens and totes for carrying accessories also is a gift item that colleagues at office would appreciate. Even if you have a lot of other priorities for instance, sports, extracurricular activities, etc., still you need to complete a senior project to graduate successfullyGift Certificates can also be presented. The gift certificates meant for car washes, house-cleaning, dry cleaners, etc. prove to be of great use and recipients would value them. There are many such items you would find suitable for gifting to employees.

Holiday Basket Gift Ideas

Presenting food baskets to employees for holidays is a trend fast catching up. Along with eatables, the basket may contain newest consumer goods available in the market. Common gift items stuffed in these baskets include candies, cookies and other such food items.

The ideas for holiday gifts for employees could be numerous and the list may go on and on. One should however, choose the best possible gift for employees that is appealing and most importantly, useful for the recipients.
